STM32WB Wireless Family of MCUs

The STM32WB is a dual-core wireless microcontroller based on a 64 MHz mainframe, Arm® Cortex®-M4 core (application processor) and a 32 MHz mainframe, Arm Cortex-M0+ core (network processor), supporting Bluetooth LE 5.2 and IEEE 802.15.4 wireless standards (e.g. ZigBee and Thread).

 Ultra Low Power Bluetooth

Bluetooth low power RF transceiver with Bluetooth™ 5.2 wireless stack and profile approved by Bluetooth SIG, V1.0 Bluetooth SIG compliant with Mesh profile requirements, and HCI for any Bluetooth low power or proprietary solution including Zephyr or Arm Cordio stacks.

IEEE 802.15.4 standard, Zigbee, Thread

A common IEEE 802.15.4 MAC layer ensures that the STM32WB can run proprietary protocols or common protocol stacks, including Zigbee PRO 2017 and OpenThread low-power mesh networking protocols, providing designers with more IoT connectivity options. Depending on device size and OTA functionality, different certification schemes are available to flexibly optimize the development platform and enable greater freedom of product application.

The STM32WB MCU can run Bluetooth LE 5.2 with support for 802.15.4 wireless protocols, Zigbee and OpenThread in concurrent mode for easier device management during installation and configuration. This feature greatly improves the ease of use and overall user experience of this technology.

The STM32WB MCUs are based on an innovative architecture with two completely independent cores, optimized for real-time execution of software code related to wireless communication on the one hand, and more flexible in resource utilization and power management on the other, enabling lower BOM costs and a better user experience.

The STM32WB MCU family uses the same development technology as the STM32L4 ultra-low-power microcontroller, offering the same digital and analog peripherals for applications that require extended battery life and sophisticated functionality.

STM32WBx5 wireless microcontrollers support multiple packages and different memory size options to enable flexibility for different performance requirements of user products and to meet the complexity of different product performance levels.

The STM32WBx0 Value Series focuses on basic, routine applications, providing developers with a functionally optimized and cost-effective solution.

System Peripherals

The STM32WBx5 family supports a wide range of communication features, including a practical crystal-less USB 2.0 FS interface, audio support, LCD driver, touch sensing, up to 72 GPIOs, an integrated SMPS for optimized power consumption and multiple low-power modes to maximize battery life.

The STM32WBx0 Value Series is targeted at entry-level solutions and offers a basic peripheral set (with a relatively low chip operating temperature range).

This product family makes the STM32 ecosystem richer and more complete, providing designers with great convenience and flexibility in all aspects from product definition to the prototyping phase to final platform definition.

Security and ID

In addition to its wireless and ultra-low power features, the STM32WB microcontroller embeds security features that reduce device maintenance requirements and ensure that end devices are trusted and cannot be cloned.

STM32WB microcontrollers also have built-in security hardware features such as 256-bit AES hardware encryption, PCROP read/write protection, JTAG fuse bits, and public key encryption with elliptic curve encryption engine. Firmware Upgrade Service (FUS), PCROP and PKA features ensure secure wireless protocol stack updates, key management and code protection.

Development Ecosystem

The STM32WB55 Nucleo kit and the STM32Cube ecosystem form a complete software development tool suite that allows you to develop applications quickly and easily.

The tool suite comes with the STM32WB microcontroller-based nucleo-64 development board and a BLE-enabled USB dongle that supports a wide range of wireless applications, making it very easy for developers to get started quickly.

The STM32WB55 Nucleo kit is fully integrated in the market-proven STM32Cube ecosystem, providing a full range of embedded software resources and development tools.

The STM32CubeWB MCU package is a one-stop solution for embedded software resources with HAL and LL peripheral drivers, complete middleware and wireless protocol stacks (Bluetooth 5.2, OpenThread and ZigBee 3.0), and a variety of pre-configured software examples (for many popular IDEs, such as Keil MDK -ARM and IAR).

The STM32WB family is also available with the STM32CubeMX tool for initialization, peripheral configuration and code generation, as well as the STM32CubeMonRF software for testing and verifying its RF functionality.

In addition to the on-board debug tools for developing and testing the program code, the STM32WB55 Nucleo board has a variety of power supply options, such as power supply via ST-LINK USB, long-life battery or external power supply.
