Power-over-Ethernet system (PoE) power-receiving device (PD) solution based on SAFE Semiconductor NCP1095/NCP1096.

In recent years, with the popularity of mobile networks and mobile devices, with the development of Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Home, PoE has begun to emerge. With the help of PoE technology, traditional equipment has new functions, and its technology greatly reduces the difficulty of deploying equipment.

PoE (Power Over Ethernet) is called a local area network-based power supply system? Or Active Ethernet (Active Ethernet), sometimes also referred to as Power Over Ethernet for short, refers to the existing Ethernet Cat.5 Without any changes to the wiring infrastructure, while transmitting data signals for some IP-based terminals (such as IP telephones, wireless LAN access points, network cameras, etc.), it can also provide DC power supply for such devices Technology. PoE technology can ensure the normal operation of the existing network while ensuring the safety of the existing structured cabling, minimizing costs. A complete PoE system includes two parts: Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and Powered Device (PD).

  • Power Supply End Equipment (PSE): PSE equipment is a device that supplies power to Ethernet client devices and is also the manager of the PoE Ethernet power supply side.
  • Power-receiving device (PD): The power-consuming device of the POE system, such as: IP phones, network security cameras, AP Routers, micro base stations, etc., and many other devices that can be connected to Ethernet networks.

NCP1095/NCP1096 are ON Semiconductor’s Ethernet Powered Device (PoE-PD) series solutions that comply with IEEE802.3bt, IEEE 802.3af and IEEE 802.3at standards, and support the development of high-power applications such as connected lighting and USB Type C. NCP1095/NCP1096 combines all the necessary functions in the PoE-PD system, such as detection, classification and start of the output stage. NCP1096 integrates hot-swappable MOSFETs, which can provide up to 90 W of output power; NCP1095 moves the hot-swappable MOSFETs to the outside, and the output power can be flexibly adjusted as required, up to 100W. NCP1095/NCP1096 also supports Autoclass, which can improve the performance of the system, and by automatically pairing power supply, it can simplify the circuit design process and settings, and optimize the power output of the PD.

Demonstration board performance verification:

1. Green Bridge (FDMQ8205A) V.S. Diode Bridge (100V)

          a. In terms of space, the area can be reduced by about 76%.

          b. Under two different load conditions (IEEE802.3at – 25.5W, 3bt – 90W),

GreenBridge-FDMQ8025A can obtain better temperature performance.

2. Under the PoE Class-8 (71.3W) test, it has an excellent efficiency of 99.2%
